Is tourism in Mexico down this year?

We've been to the Yucatan several times but that is it for Mexico. Looking at a possible trip to Mexico this winter, and I am wondering if, in light of all the press about extreme violence in Mexico, tourism overall is down this year. Thanks from someone who is curious.

I think you'd have to specify "down compared to what?" The year 2009 was a terrible year for Mexico with numbers down 16 percent from 2008. Last year meant a triple whammy for Mexico, with the worldwide recession, the drug violence, and the H1N1/swine flu outbreak. The figures aren't out yet for 2010, but it's expected to be much better than 2009. I gather everyone is still disappointed that numbers will not be back to 2008 levels though.

I don't know the facts or actual statistics. But I do feel bad for Mexico's tourism industry being hit so hard in recent years. Especially because much of it is misperception (imo). For example there's no reason to avoid Cabo or PV because of issues with the "drug cartel" or violence at "border towns".

The number of U.S. visitors who traveled to Mexico by air in the first half of 2010 is up 8 percent from last year so it is
looking lot 8-10% better than the swine flu 2009 fiasco even with the narcoterror issues mostly on the border.

With the economy on the upswing 2011 is looking up bookings
have jumped a lot recently in the tourist areas so 2011
should be LOTS better...
