Is the trip to Tikal safe?

I'm planning a vaction ot Belize in Nov and would like to go to Tikal. The US Govt travel advisory says that many armed robberies and assaults have taken place on the road to Tikal. It also mentions an American was kidnapped. Is it a it safe to make the trip? Thanks.

I'm also travelling to Guatemala in Nov. and would like to know some basic safety advisories: did you ever get any info on Tikal? I am not too worried b/c I heard from some people that it's somewhat safe..ie, don't travel there alone but in big groups, etc. Let me know what you find out!

My wife, daughter and I, flew from Guatemala City to Tikal.Flying is the safest and fastest way to reach the site. We bought the ticket at a travel agency and they arranged transportation to the hotel and park. We stayed in a lovely and charming hotel which is located inside the jungle and in front of Lake Peten: Camino Real Tikal. Our trip was safe and we did not have bad experiences. Use common sense and never, never, never stay out at night, specially in Tikal park which is huge. During the day time is 100% safe. As far as you stay within the boundaries of the park there will not be a problem.
If you wish to have more information writte me.
I keep up with assaults in this area and haven't heard of any in quite a while. Safety around here is fluid-yes they have had many problems, but then the police come in and sweep away the bad guys. You can fly to Tikal from Belize City (88.00/50 min flight). If you're going by road from one of the jungle lodges in the Cayo distrcit, ask the hotel if there's been any recent problems. Then decide whether you want to go. But assume it'll be fine.

Katie Valk
Belize

I was alone(female), took a cab from Antiqua at 4 am to Guatamala City, flew to Tikal, took the bus to Tikal and walked through the jungle with a guide. Had no problems. Definitely take a guide. The lunch was pretty bad and it was terribly hot, but worth it.
