Independent travel in Peten: advice needed

Jump to last reply

I am an art historian taking a brief trip to Tikal. I have booked my flights to Flores, but am concerned after reading the caution against traveling alone in Tikal Parque. Is it best to join an organized group tour on a daily basis (though they all seem to include flights) or to hire a guide (are a tourist and guide as safe as a group?)? Any guide or tour service that stands out among the rest?

Also, I have an extra day and I was debating whether I should spend it at Uaxactun or Yaxha or Ceibal (the helicopter to El Mirador is too extravagant!). Opinions?
