Iguana Lodge

We are considering a couple of nights at the Iguana Lodge before going to either Lapa Rios of Bosque de Cabo. The website looks like the Iguana Lodge is pretty basic... can anyone address the creature comforts there? Are you roughing it there?

Dear Jaisy,

We stayed at the Iguana Lodge March 2004. We found the place very casual and the employees are very friendly. The accommodations are basic and clean. Our bathroom was downstairs and you would sometimes find insects and crabs in the shower. But that is because you are in the jungle. The food was excellent and varied each day. We traveled with our 3 children and found the place very safe. We would stay there again. I hope this helps.

So I went back to the website to refresh my memory of what was pictured on the site. And yes, what you see is very typical of what is really there.

Yes, the rooms are rather basic, wooden walls on the bottom and screen up from about waist high. Double bed in ours. Simple. Old but powerful fans in each room. Hot water. Deck or balcony off each with chairs and hammock.

The grounds are very lush, green and dense - very pretty. The main rancho, has 3 very comfy areas to relax, gather with a group or read. The food, especially dinner was delicious. The owners join you for dinner and are very friendly and interesting people. And yes the beach is almost totally deserted for miles and miles.

I know you have looked at Peace Lodge and Punta Islita - and no at Iguana you will not find the luxury that you will at those places.

It is hard to decide! Is there something you would really like to have, maybe someone can point you to the right location?

I certainly did not feel as though I were roughing it here.

DFarmer - I suppose I have been all over the map trying to decide where to spend the second half of our trip (good thing it isn't until next year). I am still condidering the Peace Lodge and day trips from there. I am curently looking into Manuel Antonio since it is a fairly easy drive and has beaches and activities. We will spend time in the Osa and I am looking for something different - and yes, I was hoping to have a little pampering and a beach. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

I certainly did not mean that you were jumping all over the map. Trust me, I do understand. I just clicked on your screen name to get a better idea of what you are looking for, in order to give you the best advice.

In another post "Osa and Where Else?" (I believe) I suggested a way to go to MA, Osa and PL.

Now, Iguana will give you the opportunity to walk out of your room, through the garden on a flat walkway to the beach. But we did not have the water view that I had hoped for.

The Nicoya Pennisula seems to have lodgings that are on the beach. We have only been to Montezuma and stayed at El Sano Banano, which was perfect for my beach fix. But this would require another flight or long drive.

In Manual Antonio the best lodgings IMO, are sitting high on the bluffs, with absolutely stunning views of the Pacific and surrounding jungle. Our lodging in MA did not offer a beach trail, so I would leave that to someone else to suggest a place to stay.

The primary reason we chose the Iguana Lodge/Bosque split this year, was to provide me a good mix of forest and beach, without an extra flight. This was good for me, however I wish I had reversed the trip staying at Iguana first and ending at Bosque.

Bosque is fabulous. A word of advice, if you decide on BdC, do make your reservations far in advance. We booked 4 months in advance and were not guaranteed a deluxe room (which I believe you will want). Fortunately to someone else's misfortune, there was a late cancellation that gave us a deluxe room for the entire 4 nights. Previously we were scheduled to move around on the property 3 times. Sorry this is off the subject of Iguana!
