I have traveled in Mexico, Guatemala and Belize extensively. I will be in the Yucatan (on a one way ticket) for a few weeks mid Jan, and then am planning to head to El Salvador and Nicaragua, however I have time, and Honduras beckons.
I can also envision making it to Panama this trip, however I am a slow traveler so CR and Panama may have to wait - we'll see.
So far my plan is to bus to Chetumal, stay out on the Cays for a few nights, then straight through to San Ignacio.
Tikal - second time around, and then - my dilemma.
From Tikal do I head towards Rio Dulce/Copan/Utila, which l have been wanting to do, but it leaves me way far away from El Salvador.
Or do I go to Antigua and Atitlan where I have been -20 years ago- but they are in the direction I eventually want to go.
Or should I think about doing a circle - down the Pacific side and back up the Caribbean?
I enjoy beaches, colonial towns, jungle hikes and Spanish school.
Any itinerary help or must sees/dos? - what would you do?
If you had unlimited time for Central America what would you do???

Some excellent information here qwo, thank you for taking the time - perhaps a little bit ambitious for my slow travel routine, but I do have friends in Columbia and have thought about the boat trip from Panama. Thank you for all the links. Panama Hostel looks fun! Much appreciated.
Lake Atitlán is my favorite place on earth aside from my own home so Antigua/Atitlán would have my vote. Then you can decide what is calling you - Copán and onto the Bay Islands of Honduras or into El Salvador - both are easily accessed from Antigua/Guatemala City.
