How to Reach Cancun Tourists

My daughter's dream honeymoon destination was Cancun, Mexico. The wedding went off without a hitch and was planned out perfectly, but the honeymoon - not so much. There hasn't been a word from her since her plane departed from Dallas on Tuesday morning (July 15th), and we never got her itinerary! Neither her, nor her husband's, cell phone is accepting calls, and texts are not being replied to. An avid Facebook user, she (or her husband) hasn't made one comment concerning the posted wedding photos. I'm far from a meddling mom, but I do worry, and silence is not her nature.
My question is, how do you assure that a loved one in Cancun arrived safely without knowing which hotel they're staying at?

The honeymoon may be going *very* well, which would explain the lack of communication. This is most likely the case. It is only the 17th now and I don't think it is unreasonable for a honeymooning couple to go off the communication grid for a couple days. And it isn't as though Cancun is some crazy, exotic place where "anything" can happen. It is a pretty straightforward destination - your flight lands, you go through immigration and customs, get your transfer or taxi, and go to your resort.

If they don't have an international calling/data/text plan on their phones, then they may not have turned their phones on when they arrived or (in the case of smartphones) may have left them in airplane mode. That would explain the lack of texts and calls. And depending on where they are staying, there might be a charge to use wifi - the nicer the place, the higher the wifi charges is my experience - or wifi may only be available in limited areas, such as the lobby. That could explain the lack of communication on FB.

But, to ease your mind, if they booked through a travel agent, then you might be able to get the information through that person. And if they didn't or you don't know the travel agent's name, you could ask their friends - I would bet money that the maid of honor and brides maids know where they went on their honeymoon.

I'm not sure there is anything you can do if you don't even know their itinerary, what flight they took or what hotel they are booked at.

This doesn't help you now but I have an agreement that I email my family upon arrival in Mexico since I travel solo so they know I am OK and have arrived safely.

I would not worry about their phones not working (as they may not have made arrangements for them to work in Mexico) or them not being on Facebook - since it's only 2 days and it IS their honeymoon.

You could try calling her friends to see if anyone knows the hotel/resort name.

Holly smokes, give them a break... it's only been close to 3 days now, including travel time and all. They will be in touch when they get their bearings and know their way around. I have been in that area countless times, there's a million things to see and do, especially for a young married couple...
I am quite confidant that getting in touch with you is not high on their priority list !!!

It is hard to believe a mother wouldn't know where her daughter was going on her honeymoon out of the country, or have made any arrangements about how they were going to keep in touch, but I guess it's possible. Unfortunate but possible.

People make arrangements about how to keep in touch when on honeymoons? Actually I called my mom to say "hi" about half way through my honeymoon - her response was that while it was always nice to talk to me, why the heck was I calling her on my honeymoon? LOL. I do usually leave her my itinerary when I am out of the country though, but sometimes I forget. Maybe with all the wedding prep, the daughter forgot to give mom her itinerary.

If I were not going to get in touch with my family on a trip, I'd let them know that in advance. I won't have email or didn't have a phone connection, whatever. This mom must have been expecting contact, or she wouldn't be so freaked out.

Well said November-moon, and as we all know, Mexico has had more than it's share of bad publicity. What we see here is a result of all that... besides, the new couple is on their own time, away from all those resposibilities, including going through the motions of finding out how to call home !

Maybe they are staying at one of the "fun" adult only resorts Cancun has a few. Not wanting to shock Mom with what might be going on with her sweet little girl .

I thank you for all your replies, and no, I'm not a "troll". My daughter had made arrangements to contact me, but never gave me her itinerary, and flights were delayed by a day. I went through her office and found the note she meant to give me, showing the hotel as El Dorado Royale for 4 nights. As I am absolutely unfamiliar with travel out of the states, I have been more than a bit worried and came here seeking advice. I meant no intrusion. Again, I appreciate the words of assistance, but I just need to know she is safe. Sorry to bother.

I'm glad you found the information you needed and hope that you have contacted her and/or otherwise confirmed her safety.

Not all of us thought you were a troll. Please let us know that you got the news you hoped to hear!

I have a question. How did you get access to the Lounge here if you just joined Fodors in July 2014? Access to the Lounge stopped in April 2013. If you were not on Fodors and had posted in the Lounge by April 2013, then you can not get access to view or post in the Lounge.

This is very curious and lots of us will be interested in the answer to that.

I am sure they are fine. Cell phones do not always work in Mexico and the weather has been beautiful. There have been no articles in the local paper about any problems with tourists which generally there are not. Sometimes parties get a bit out of hand but nothing going on now. Hopefully, if you are really worried you have called or emailed the hotel.

emd3 - sold my place! Hope you are faring well too.

<absolutely unfamiliar with travel out of the states>

There's nothing special about traveling to Mexico. Now that you have the hotel name, have you called them?
