Usually the only thing that people visiting Costa Rica go home without is... stress. Of course there's petty crime, show me a place where there isn't, but all in all Costa Rica is one of the safest places to go to. Just as with any other destination - even in your own country - you don't go around flashing fancy jewelry, expensive cameras, big bundles of money and leave all that visible in the rental car.
Take the normal precautions and take a lot of sunscreen... another environmental issue: we have plenty of sun and we're not afraid to show it.
Have fun.

Rudy & Odette have it right, it's very safe in CR with a minumum of precautions. In fact, many who have been visiting CR for some time might now say that its "too safe" and more like Disneyland for eco-tourists than the CentralAmerican jungle adventure you may have in mind! Those people might be heading for Panama, Belize or elsewhere in the region where politics are not so stable and people not quite so well-fed, etc. If you have not been to CR for sure go and enjoy the beaches and restaurants of Tamarindo, the natural wonders of the Arenal area and the great friendly people! Good luck, you'll have fun!
Is New york or Los Angelos safe? Probably so if you act like you live there - we have never had a problem in New York but don't ask about Rome - Costa Rica is one of the friendliest, safest places we have been. I went with friends on my first trip and I was the driver for 10 days - what a blast! Finally convinced my husband to go and he fell in love with the place.
We know more Americans that have settled there - we are currently purchasing property in Tamarindo - will have to look up Rudy and Odette. It's known as the "pure life" So go and enjoy!
