How Many Nights?
Everyone has been really helpful, so I have one more post. We arrive in Tikal in early afternoon, and will explore the ruins that day and the following day. We will stay in the park. Our question is about the end of the second day. Should we spend that 2nd night in Flores? We fly out the next morning at 8:30. Or, I suppose we could leave at 6:50 that night, and then fly to GUA and on to Antigua, so that we have a little more time there. That would give us two nights in Antigua, rather than one. I know, this all seems too rushed, but this is a shorter vacation than usual, so I am faced with these dilemmas. Thanks in advance!

You won't be able to spend the night in Flores if you have an 8:30am flight from GUA. You'd have to take a plane or the night bus leaving Flores the afternoon or night before your flight. You'll need to be at the airport by 6:00 or 6:30am at the latest. Maybe I'm reading your question wrong.
One more note, if you enter the ruins after 3:00 or 3:30pm your tickets will be good for the next day (save them!). If you're arriving in the early afternoon it will be easy to spend the time exploring the stores and museums near the park until the time comes. Tickets have jumped to $20 in the last year or so.

Yes, the flight from Flores to GUA is at 8:30 in the morning. Then, we'd go by road to Antigua. So, is it best to spend a second night in Tikal/Flores, and catch that morning flight, or should we spend only the one night in Tikal (which would mean a full afternoon, evening, and most of the following day until our night flight out of Flores to Tikal)? If just one night, we miss any time in Flores, but gain more time in Antigua. Sorry for the confusion!

I get it now - sorry for my confsion. Since your itinerary is pretty pushed, I'd stick with 1 night. For most folks that's enough. You'd spend a few hours looking at the interpretive exhibits and/or museum and shopping, have time for a quick loop around the grand plaza area including climbing a pyramid or 2 in the afternoon before dinner, up early for great wildlife viewing and areas other than the great plaza (we love Mundo Perido), and explore till the sun gets to you and the day trippers converge on the site around noon. That would still give you time to shuttle back to Santa Elena/Flores, grab a bite, explore a little, and make it to the airport ahead of your flight. When I was there last year we were told to arrive 2 hours ahead even though it was a domestic flight. Flores is cute but a quick look would be enough imo. Keep us posted!
