How Far is Water Taxi from Belize City to Ambergris Caye?

Hi..how far is the water taxi from Belize City to Ambergris Caye?? Does it leave from the same place as the water taxi to Caye Caulker?? As we are taking a tour and getting off at Belize City to head to Ambergris, the rest of the group is going to Caye Caulkeer...How rough is the water?? I get bad motion sickness...

And how far is the airport from the water Taxi station if we decide to fly.??

Thanks

I think it takes between 45 minutes to 1 1/2 hours depending on how rough the water is, how windy it is, etc. I've gotten pretty soaked just using the water taxi around Ambergris but you never know how you'll hit it. I'd have a wind breaker with a tie down hood handy if it were me. Might also want to put a plastic dry cleaner bag inside your suitcase to protect your clothes a little better. Sometimes there is a bikini boat top to get under but if there is much wind, you just get nailed from the side.

I can't imagine needing to take sea sickness meds but then I'm not extra sensitive that way. If there's a lot of chop to the water, you might want to take something.

You will end up in San Pedro and it is easy to get a cab.

Are you coming from a cruise ship? I'm not understanding all of your questions, but here's at least some partial answers.

The entire trip is inside the reef, so shouldn't be rough. The newer water taxis are at least partly covered, so rain/wind spray isn't nearly as much of a problem.

The water taxi terminals and the municipal airport are a short cab distance apart. The flight is about 20 minutes vs. about 90 to Ambregris via water taxi. The cost to fly is US$35.00 one way. If you're going on a day trip, that's probably what I would do.

As far as I know it's the same water taxi going to Caulker as to Ambergris.

Thanks..Linda...Jean..i am not sure what u didn't understand !! We are not on a Cruiseship..We are taking a tour from Mexico City, through Mexico and Guatemala and then staying in Belize for 6 nights after...We are ending the tour in Belize City and going to Ambergris, some of the other people on the tour are going to Caye Caulker with the tour group,of which the tour continues for another week, but u had the option to get off. (hope that makes sense).

So because i just found out the tour ends right where the water taxi station is, i wondered if it would be a better option to just take the water taxi to San Pedro..but if the airport is that close, i will skip it and fly..

We are staying at Ramon's for the 6 nights and then flying to Corozol, and then taking a bus to Playa del Carmen for 3 nights, and then to Cancun to catch our flight home back to Canada via Mexico City...

Thanks..sorry for the confusion!!!!!

We are leaving Canada on October 29th and will be attending the Day of the Dead Festival, it should be fun.!!!

Your trip sounds wonderful. I guess I was confused because when most people mention tours and Belize City together, they're talking about coming off a cruise ship.

Enjoy your stay at Ramon's. It's on a very nice stretch of beach.

We've done the flight to Corozal/bus to Playa route a couple times. It's easy and pleasant.

Let me know if you'd like any restaurant suggestions in San Pedro.

Yes Jean, any restaurant suggestions would be appreciated, or anything to do that we shouldn't miss....I don't think we are gonna be too energetic after the 2 week tour, it is an adventure tour and u tend to be totally worn out by the end of those tours...but a good way to see this area with a small group.

Perhaps a nice snorkelling trip for half a day would be nice!!

Thanks..

Tracy

Here's some restaurant ideas, starting with the high end places. Closest to Ramon's would be Blue Water Grill, in my experience, good, but not great food. Nice setting though.

A bit further up the beach, Wild Mango's is awesome. Never had a bad meal there and the mojitos are very good.

On the lagoon side, Sunset Grill is good as well. And it's fun to feed the tarpon.

South of town a bit is Hidden Treasure. I've enjoyed every meal I've eaten there.

On the north side of town is Red Ginger, located in the Phoenix. It's only been open since this past spring. Gets good reviews, but the cold air conditioning also gets mentioned. So, I haven't been.

There is also Rojo Lounge and Capricorn north of town. You'll need a water taxi. I have only been to both at lunch, and it's been a few years, but they still get good reviews.

For more moderate dining, El Divino at Banana Beach has good food at decent prices. Caramba downtown is good as well. Celi's at Holiday Hotel is ok. Mexican food at Caliente is good. We eat at George's quite a bit, it's south of town, maybe half a mile from Ramon's.

There are good burritos at BC's Beach Bar, which is practically next door to you. Warugama downtown has huge burritos, but, sometimes seems to have very high prices. El Fogon, close to the airport has good local food for lunch.

Don't hesitate to try the street food. Most of it is very good, and I don't hear tales of folks getting sick from eating it. Lots of barbecued chicken, especially on the weekends.

Do rent a golf cart of bikes and explore the north end of the island. I prefer bikes, you can ride on the beach and stop at various bars/restaurants along the way. Make sure and stop at the Palapa Bar, it sits out over the water and has greast views. Only about a mile north of town, we used to walk there when we used to stay close to Ramon's. Takes a while, but a pleasant trek.

Enjoy your stay. When do you travel?

Thanks Jean for all those tips and suggestions for restaurants, i will print them off!! We leave Canada on Oct 29 and get to Belize on Nov. 12!! mmmm....... Mojito's are my favorite, i can taste them already!!

Street food sounds good to me, do they make their chicken like the Jamaican Jerk Chicken ( i heard they did)..

Sounds like we will have a lot of fun...For the last 10 years or so we have mainly travelled to Asia, so this will be a nice change and alot less jet lag!!

There is a Jamaican restaurant, but the street food generally isn't jerk. Tasty though.

Hi TracyB - i noticed you didn't get some of your questions answered - hope my reply comes in time to better plan your upcoming trip...

how far is the water taxi from Belize City to Ambergris Caye?? Does it leave from the same place as the water taxi to Caye Caulker?

Water Taxis to caye caulker & san pedro leave from the same general area - offices are just down the street from each other. Caye Caulker is about 45mins away, with San Pedro being another 15mins or so further on. Depending onw hich boat you take, expect a short stop in caye caulker before continuing on to san pedro.

As we are taking a tour and getting off at Belize City to head to Ambergris, the rest of the group is going to Caye Caulkeer...How rough is the water?? I get bad motion sickness...
Travel is inside the reef, so generally calm. However the sea can indeed get rough, particularly as you head into november. The boats are big and comfortable so motion sickness issues should be at a minimum if any at all. My sister gets motion sickness as well as generally doesn't have a problem on these boats. However when the boat docks at caye caulker en route to san pedro it can be a little rocky.

And how far is the airport from the water Taxi station if we decide to fly.
There are two areas to fly from - the international airport which is about 20mins from the city (but closer if you are returning on the northern highway from your tour) at US$63pp and municipal airstrip which is about 5-10mins away at US$35pp. Same rate applies to both san pedro & caye caulker.

Thanks for all that info..Kim...our tour actually ends at the water Taxi Station as the rest of the Group is going to Caye Caulker, and we are ending the tour and going on our own to Ambergris....so should we make our flight reservation from the Municipal or the International Airport based on that, cause i believe the hotel is making the flight reservation tomorrow!!

Thanks again..i better not go on the boat as i don't need to get sick if i don't have to

Take the plane from Municipal. It's way cheaper, and closer to where you'll be. The cab ride back to BZE alone would be almost as much as the flight from Municipal to San Pedro.
