Honeymoons in Margarita?

We are considering going to Margarita Island for our honeymoon in May 2000. Looking for all inclusive, preferably a "villa" type accommodation (i.e. not a room in a high rise). I've seen praise of Isle Bonita, but not in the recent past. Any suggestions, recommendations? Is Margarita safe these days? I get the impression we should not make a visit to the capitol city a part of our trip (is it still unsafe?). Any updated info would be most appreciated.

I am also going to Margarita Island for my honeymoon in March 2000. I have done a lot of research, and as far as I can tell, the island itself is very safe. You have to take the normal precautions while travelling, of course, but besides that, you should be fine. Just stay away from the border of Columbia.

My husband and I visited Margarita in March '98, we found it to be very safe and tranquil. We stayed in Playa El Agua and took a 30 min. walk to Playa Manzanillo (a fishing town), and also took a bus to and from downtown. We didn't run into any possible unsafe situations.
By the way, Colombia is spelled with an "O"! And you'll be plenty far from that border.

Dear Moria,
We have been to Margarita Island on two occasions (Jan '96 and Jan '98). We felt safe there both times. One place you might want to find out about is Coche Island. The Coche Speed Paradise Hotel is there. It is a 20 minute boat ride from Margarita Island. It is especially beautiful and pristine on Coche. Just a suggestion. Good luck with your plans. We really enjoyed Margarita Island!

There are so many better islands than Isla Marqarita. I have been to every Caribbean island and find Margarita to have dirty beaches, literally no snorkeling, lots of tourists, expecially on weekends and now that the beaches in the total coat of Venezuela are closed due to pollution. Margarita is not that far away, who knows what will wash up on the beach. Go to Costa Rica. Much better believe me.
