Ho, Ho, Oaxaca

We (my husband and I) have just decided we'd love to spend Christmas in Oaxaca. and are concerned it may bit too late. Since it's Christmas and this will be our gift to each other I really want somewhere nice to stay. Can you recommend somewhere?

What about schedules of Posada's etc. Do you know where we can find a list?

Any other hints or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The festival de Los Rabanos on Christmas eve is not to be missed. It is bizarre and totally amazing.

We like Parador San Miguel very much. A block off the Ocalo but quiet and peaceful and a very good restaurant onsite also. Lovely little courtyard.

You can not participate, you can observe. And eat bunelos and smash the plate that night.

Just google it, yes it is real. Google it and you will see.

How high end do you want? Parador San Miguel is very nice. if you want really high end, look at the Quinta Real Oaxaca. It's the highest end in Oaxaca.

We are booked for a week in November at Casa Oaxaca. It is on the high end for the city and very small, but you might want to take a look. I've stayed a few times at Quinta Real, before it had that name. There is a big variationn in rooms, so I would investigate before booking, and take a look at the room before checking in.

there are lots of holiday decor the streets, lights, hangings across the streets, etc. around Christmas. But I have not seen a lot of decorations inside the hotels. If that is what you mean by festive....

The Christmas festivity and celebrations all take placein the streets and zocalo.

See this trip advisor post by Alvin Starkmam, who is a guide in Oaxaca and who owns a B&B there also. He talks about the different posadas and parades.

Thank you. I guess when I say festive I mean I vibe and I always enjoy colonial décor. But, now I'm having a major problem with finding anyone that has vacancies. I've sent emails to 8 hotels which web sites they are booked and hoped someone will find a room at the inn for us.

if you truly can not find anything in the entire city, there are options just outside of town. Two that come to mind are Linda Hanna's B&B (she is a serious folk art collector and guide and her house is filled with the most wonderful collection of MX folk art I have ever seen) or Alvin Starkmann's B&B (also a guide). Both of them will drive you into the city and pick you up to get back, or you can easily cab it.

Not high-end, but definitely charming: Las Golondrinas. Probably not what the poster wants, but mentioning it in case others are looking.

We could not get a hotel for the entire time so we are splitting up between : La Casona de Tita and Hotel Casa de Sierra Azul which is a little closer to the center. I'm sure they will both be fine and we are very excited.
