We will be flying in and out of Mexico City. Have been to Mexico lots of times, but never the big city and it's surroundings. We are particularly interested in the "magic" towns around Mexico City. Does anyone know if there are buses that we can take from town to town? We'll stay about a week in mexico City and a week in other towns. Does anyone have favorites ? Seems like Cholula, Valle de Bravo, Malinalco and Taxco would be within a decent distance. Thanks for any info.

CDMX's 4 main bus stations pretty much line up with compass points. This link gives a good primer on which station serves which states/cities, etc:

Cholula of course is part of Puebla's metro area, so time in Puebla would be well spent.
Valle De Bravo, IMO, is only OK, nothing too special and it gets very crowded on the weekend. Midweek it's dead thus some shops and such are closed.
Taxco would be a better choice, I think.
Don't know Malinalco.
Another viable option might be the 3 Pueblos Magicos of Mineral Del Chico, Mineral Del Monte, and Huasca De Ocampo near Pachuca. Soccer was introduced to Mexico in MD Monte by Cornish miners. There's a couple of old haciendas worth visiting, and the Primsmas Basalticas are cool. Mineral Del Monte's center has been recently restored and is quite attractive. I think they have more bars than any other town it's size in Mexico, I suppose due to it's mining history. Pastes, kind of an empanada, is the local food specialty. You can bus it from CDMX to Pachuca, but from there, there are collectivos that go up the mountain.

My favorite, is Mexico city itself with all it has to offer... and there are is plenty to see and do.
Take the hop on-hop off tour bus for different areas to appreciate.
Parque Chemultepec and the Castle...
Main square in distrito historico
Xchemamilco small boat rides
Teothehuacan pyramids
Archelogical site besides the Cathedral and the Cathedral itself
Museum of anthropology
Frida Kahlo house in Coyoacan and Diego Rivera also
Just these alone will keep you busy for the better part of the week.
Of course you will want to try out the myriad of restaurants for every taste.
When tired, you can visit a park... there are hundreds...
No need to leave such a beautiful city and amazingly warm people...
I was often reminded of Europe with it's streets, cafes, shopping districts and vibrant feel and culture...

The Anthropological Museum is Smithsonian quality. Allow the better part of a day for this wonderful experience. The Ruins right at the Zocalo are worth several hours & of course a full day at Teotihuacan IMO.

You are in for a real treat with a week in Mexico City and another in nearby towns - hope you are getting excited. Do not miss Teothehuacon. Mexico City is (I think) on par with Rome and Paris and better than London or Berlin - so do your research on Mexico City, there is much to do and the museums are wonderful. All advice above is accurate. You may also find the Floating Gardens of Xochimilco interesting - it has recently been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is similar to taking a gondola ride in Venice - but much more interesting! (you can Youtube a couple of videos).

thanks for all responses and ideas for visiting Mexico City. We decided to divide our time between Oaxaca and Mex City. I've been to Oaxaca before and am anxious to go back. From what I've read on your posts I don't think we'll have trouble having a great time.
