HELP! Pregnant/malaria in CR
I am leaving in a month for Costa Rica, for a 1 week trip at Arenal, Papagayo, and Peace Lodge. I have recently found out that I am pregnant (yes, this is a good thing!). We had been planning to take malaria prophylaxis, but now I'm not sure. Yes, I will ask my dr, but I'm just wondering whether absolutely everyone takes malaria pills for their travel to CR. I would rather not, since none of the meds are proven safe, but obviously don't want malaria either! Did you all take meds for your trip?

Never take malaria meds ever. Malaria is not common issue but dengue fever outbreak in March of this year was an issue. Seems to be under control now...haven't heard any new info in several months.

I would definitely check w/ your doctor
about Dengue fever. According to a Reuters report on 9/7/05, there is an outbreak of Dengue fever in Costa Rica - more than 19,000 cases reported in Costa Rica this year. http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/N07212679.htm
Also check out the CDC advisory, which is current as of today -http://www.cdc.gov/travel/other/dengue_costa_rica_2005.htm

Dengue has been prevalent in both CR and Panama in recent months, people just aren't being as careful with leaving standing water around where they can breed... Unless going really bush bashing, malaria not the problem and there's no prophylaxis for Dengue so just be prepared to prevent with the best repellents etc.
Lived in Mexico/Central America for last 10 years and another 9 in tropical places before that and no malaria meds ever. Just prevention...
Cheers,
Andrew

Our daughter spent 8 weeks last summer during the first trimester of her pregnancy. No problems. In all our trips there, we've never taken anything but plenty of sunscreen and insect repellent!
Dengue is a problem in some areas (there was a high incidence of it in 2003 and I had 2 friends who contracted it), but with proper precautions, you should be just fine! Use the repellent. We traveled there this past summer with an infant (yep, she who was "in the womb" last year). We were careful with her and used a child repellent when we thought it was necessary, but all went well. That's not to say there isn't some chance. . .
Have fun!
