Help in where to go!- Opinion in Cancun

Hi - Merry Christmas! My February trip to Grand Cayman got cancelled due to hurricane damage. Not a lot of time to book now - thought we would try Cancun for a quick get away - staying at the Ritz Carlton - two people have told us we won't like Cancun- really just want to soak up the sand and sun and relax. Don't want to go anywhere where it takes us all day to get there making connecting flights. Thanks for any help.

Muffy - I'd be interested in knowing what those people don't like about Cancun....it's perfect for what you're looking for. The weather is great and the beaches are beautiful. Cancun is one of our favorite destinations and we return every year. Haven't stayed at the Ritz but I'm sure it's a great resort. Don't worry, you'll love Cancun.

Muffy~~!!
There's not a better place in the world for sand and sun than Cancun! I read bad stuff about it all the time, but it's one of those places I always find myself wanting to go back to again & again.
And the Ritz should be more than fine.

Cancun does have some of the most beautiful sand and beaches I've ever seen. But, you'd have to pay me to stay there again. On our one and only trip there, I looked at my husband after our first two hours and said "What in the world are we going to do here for a week?" We did end up having a decent time, but have found Isla Mujeres or the small hotels in Playa del Carmen to be a much better fit for us.

That being said, a few days of sand and sun, and some very good restaurants in the area, should meet your needs.

Obviously, a lot of people do like Cancun, there wouldn't be so darn many hotels and resorts if they didn't....

I'll ditto the comment that Cancun is just what you are looking for. If you want to do things, you can go out to the Mayan ruins or Isla Mujeres for the day or down to Cozumel. But it's a great place to just sit, sun and relax. You won't have a lot of spring breakers at the Ritz. Get downtown for dinner--it's a shame to stay just in the hotel zone. Go to www.cancunandrivieramaya.com for good info.

We've been to Mexico 4 times and Grand Cayman once. We prefer Mexico. Though Grand Cayman has some of the nicest beaches, it doesn't offer the day time or evening activities that we enjoy. There is more to see in do with the options of going to other areas like Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Isla Mujeras, the ruins, etc.

We are looking forward to getting back to Mexico soon. Probably won't ever return to Grand Cayman.

My family of four (two sons 21 and 17) just returned from 7 days of 70s and 80+degrees in Cancun. You'll like Cancun if you like walking on white sandy beaches, swimming in turquoise watery waves, moderate humidity to keep your skin from drying out, drinks under beach umbrellas, reading by the pool, exercising in the gym, shopping (La Isla and La Carachol, Lancome at -20%), easy debit card ATM access for pesos, Hilton course golf at $70 (50% discount), daytrips to Tulum Mayan ruins and frigate bird- and pelican-watching on la Isla contoy, 6.5 peso busrides up and down the main drag, good seafood, great margaritas and Mexican food (la Parilla downtown in Cancun City, $12/135 peso taxifare, $84 for family of four with drinks), snorkeling through schools of dinner plate+ sized brightly colored fish at Xel Ha (on same trip to Tulum), discoing from 10PM to 4AM at The City (loud techno and some great shows, $35 open bar, wife in for $15; also Coco Bongo and La Boom), margaritas and marimbas and mariachis and dancing and flaming coffee at Perico's downtown, boogie boards on the beach, silver jewelry at a good price after bargaining, only $18 cabfare back to the airport, and only a 2 hr trip by air back to Atlanta. A word of moderate warning: there are numerous vendors trying to sell you a timeshare. Buy one if you want to come back to Cancun; you could do a whole lot worse as far as vacation spots go! Otherwise, steer clear of their spiels, beginning at the airport, and avoid their come-ons such as discounted tickets and free meals. We all loved Cancun and we will be going back! Happy New Year!
