Have been to Costa Rica...where to next? (help)!
My 30th birthday is closely approaching (sigh) and would like to celebrate by going away for 7 nights somewhere. We went to Costa Rica this past summer and LOVED it. This summer we are planning a BIG trip, probably to Thailand. In planning for a 30th get away, I am looking for the following -
budget friendly - airfare, hotel(s), food, excursions, - no more than $3K (prefer to stay under $2.5K)
beach!! a must!
if time allows would like to stay at 2 different hotels in different places or sides of the country
activities, night life (not mandatory but 1 or 2 nights out is fun)
Part of why we liked CR so much is that it had everything we ever wanted to a cheap price - we were able to be on vacation and experience the culture of the locals while have adventure and some beach time. I know we can't recreate the same vacation but would like to have another cultural experience somewhere else.
Any recommendations?

Belize would have been my first suggestion too. We went last summer and I really loved it. There's so much to do, and a lot to not do too! A lot of great beach time - and the reef is amazing. Great ruins as well. Check it out! I would want to go for more than 7 days if you're going to do a split of jungle and sea - but you could make it work with 7 days!

I'm thinking Belize is in the future as well. Although it's tough for me to steer you from going to Costa Rica again seeing as how my trip this June will make 2-1/2 months spent there and still not have seen or done everything I want to!
Thailand is amazing and even though you mention going big it can actually be VERY cheap once you get there...depending on where you want to splurge! Have a great trip!

Nicaragua is a nice, interesting getaway. Granada is a charming old colonial city, hotels are cheap (think mine was $55 and it was pretty snappy), dinners ran around $5, lots of great activities nearby such as Mombacho and Masaya volcanoes, plus the Isletas. The other place I stayed would probably blow your budget - Morgans's Rock, though it is was really nice. You could stay in San Juan del Sur which is an hour South of there and get your beach time in.
