i was told that the airport is having an extensive expansion, and currently is quite a mess. can anyone verify? is there an easily identifiable place for us to meet (i.e. restaurant, monument, etc)?

Hi bodhijack,
the Guatemalan airport is not that big... as soon as you pass immigration, the baggage pick-up is right there and everyone picks up their luggage in that spot... so you can wait for her right there and wont miss her. If by any chance you have to go outside, you can wait also for her right there... everyone exits from the same door... just be careful as there are always alot of people waiting for family or friends.
The airport is almost finished and it is very nice and manageable.
have a good trip

Just went through the airport on Sunday evening...from what I saw most of the renovations appear to be done, and WOW have they modernized it in the last year!
I still say baggage claim is the easiest area since you're only 10 minutes apart, but outside the doors would work too...but there will be a lot of drivers hanging around.

Last time I was there in January, after exiting out of the plane you will walk by the other gates... maybe you can check what time her plane comes in when you get there...also there is an eating area (there is only one) you can also wait there...it will be on your right hand side... if things have changed and you go directly downstairs to passport control, then wait for her at the baggage area. There are no cafes outside.
