My wife and I are planning a trip to Costa Rica in September. Plan is to fly into Liberia. We enjoy the freedom of renting a car and traveling on our own schedule. Since this is during the rainy season and weather is unpredictable is it advisable to drive ourselves all over the province?

Suggestions for car hire companies? Read a bad review of Alamo in LIR. We are very active and like to stay in off the path hotels, preferably family run establishments. Suggestions for hiking, kayaking, surf schools & cool hippie towns along the coast is our bent. Appreciate any and all suggestions.

Nosara, Carrillo, Guiones, Santa Teresa are excellent beaches and "off of the beaten path". The last one I mentioned isn't in Guanacaste but you can reach it easily (specially if you rent a car). I really recommend you Lacquaviva Hotel if you think on Nosara beach. Guanacaste has many options, but the "hippie" spot is Puerto Viejo (Caribbean Coast). Hope you have fun and enjoy Costa Rica!
