groceries in puerto vallarta

Any recommendations for grocery/cervesa provisioning? does it make sense to stop enroute from the airport to our Conchas Chinas accomodations?

Depends where you want to shop. The Gigante, Sams Club, etc. are nearer the airport and you could stop on your way in.

But my favorite is just south of the river in the Old Town - Rizo's supermercado a great 2-story local grocery store with everything you'd need.

That is the closest one to you, so rather than stop on your way (when you'd have an airport taxi waiting with your luggage, etc.)... I'd probably go to the condo, take a peak around in case there's anything extra to buy (missing dishtowels or needing extra glasses, for example) then head back and do the grocery store run at Rizo's on a separate trip... (they offer a bakery and deli, fresh produce, all manner of staples, spices, liquor, beer, wine, kitchen wares, papergoods, toiletries, etc.).

Agree with the poster on Rizos. I would not miss the experience of shopping in this real Mexican landmark.

Almost to the end of the hotel zone is a grocery store called the Mega, just 2 blocks north of the Sheraton Buganvilias. It's very good. If you cook and need the spice saffon you can get it much cheaper there. Ask the girls behind the cheese counter for "azafran". It comes in a small 1" package and sells for 200 pecos each.
