I would not recommend AI in PDC as there are far too many excellent restaurants there to chose from, but if you are set on that, I've heard that the Porto Real is not bad.
The other AI's further down the coast are pretty far away from Playa del Carmen, but there are a lot of them to choose from. Again, I don't go to AI's so don't know much about them. They might be a good option if you want to stick close to the resort for most of your vacation as trips and cab fares from that area can get quite pricy.
The only AI I could recommend down 307 in that area south of Cancun without hesitation is the Royal Hideaway.

Diana (or anyone else), do you have any tips for a NON AI hotel in PDC? I am thinking about Playa Maya. Need to be on a good beach, have a nice pool and walking distance to town. Stayed at an AI last time too far to walk to town on a company trip, and will never do that again...

I stayed for a couple nights at Playa Maya Hotel. It's a great hotel, very nicely run and excellent location. The only thing bad I can say, and it's not TOO bad, is the the pool ive very, very small.

I also did stay at Playa Maya earlier this year for four nights.
I agree with Ally's assessment.
The pool is small but nice, and the place is extremely clean and well run.
It's VERY close to everything while still being quiet and tranquil, and they have nice chairs with umbrellas available right in front of the hotel on the lovely stretch of beach.
We got the deluxe rooms, and they were quite reasonable and we were very pleased.
Steve - the owner/manager - is a delight to work with and makes sure you enjoy your stay.

We stayed at the Gala Resort three times. We upgraded to the Junior Suite which included three rooms -- A king bedroom, a bedroom with two fulls and a cot(for our third child) and a living room in the middle with TV/DVD/Nintendo player. All three had ocean front balconies, the all-inclusive includes room service, we had 2 1/2 baths and a very good time, especially on the beautiful beach. It was such a good deal, that my husband and I went into Playa most nights for dinner while the kids stayed at the hotel with the club to watch the evening entertainment. Fabulous vacations.

Diana, Ally, or anyone...Since we will have two 12 year olds on the trip to PDC, a pool is a priority since they love to swim. Small pool at the Playa Maya may be a problem. Do you have any other suggestions for a hotel on a good stretch of beach, nice pool for the kids, non AI and walking distance to town? Anyone know if El Faro or Shangri-la Carribe would fit the bill? Thanks!

Ah, yes, with two 12 years olds who love to swim, Play Maya's pool would be too small for them. I've not stayed at the other places you mention, but have been by El Faro as it's very close to Playa Maya. If you still wanted to be 'in town', El Faro would be a good choice for you. However, Shangri La Caribe has received some get reviews of people who stay there and the pool at the 'carribean' section sure looks nice. The beach would be MUCH nicer than any of the hotels 'in town'. The only slight down side I would see for Shangri La is that is probably a 10-15 minute walk to 5th Ave, which is where most of the 'action' is for restaurants and shopping. If you don't mind walking that far, it would be great!

I'll second the recommendation for the Riu AI resorts in PDC. We stayed at the Riu Playacar a year ago and it was great. The pools and beach were beautiful, the room was large and comfortable, there was a shopping area across the street and we were only a 5-minute cab ride from downtown PDC.
AIs are GREAT with kids! The resorts all have Kids Clubs that will keep them busy with kids their own age, and you won't have to constantly have a hand in your pocket for snacks and drinks.
