Gifts for Belize residents?
Hi - I'm already planning my return to Caye Caulker and I didn't pay enough attention to what's both overpriced and desired there. (for women and kids)
I'm wondering what I could bring with me for my next visit for some of the Belizian residents? Like in Guatemala, one of the things I'd bring would be peanut butter which was $7 USD (for a big jar) and my teacher had never tasted it before. We ate it on toast with honey drizzled on top and she and her little girl loved it -- she asked for the rest of the jar when I left.
Are there things that people like being brought from the States - cosmetics, creams, medications, little toys? I saw some of the local children find silly bands left by some tourist kids and they seemed excited. Do they already sell those on the Cayes or is that something I could bring?
JeanH, anybody?

I'd see if someone has a contact for the local school and see what's on their wish list. Frequently, it's art supplies. I don't hand out stuff to kids, I'm afraid it encourages a 'culture of begging'. Bring little toys if you wish, but, give them to the teachers to be handed out as rewards.
Peanut butter is very expensive. If you know someone who likes it, I'm sure some would be appreciated.
Before Kindles became so popular, I used to end up with lots of paperback novels in my condo. I took them to the library.
Other than that, I just give cash to the staff where I live. I know they work hard and don't make a lot of money.

thx jeanh -- i read a similar post on another board about not passing out stuff to children that way and I think it's a very good point. One of the daughters told me her best subject was in math but i have no idea how to facilitate that skill....
Perhaps just a large tip for the mom makes the most sense. thanks again
