flight problems?
I have tickets from NYC-San Jose in July. We are flying LACSA. I am getting nervous about the airlines and the fuel prices. I saw on CNN this morning that several airlines are going out of business. Does anyone know anything about this? Do you know if trip insurance covers something like this? If I had to buy new tickets now on an American airline, I don't think I could afford it. I'd love to hear some opinions out there

Personally, I wouldn't worry about LACSA - I believe it's been around for decades. A lot of the carriers that are going under are small regional carriers here in the US. Friends of ours recently booked their honeymoon to Hawaii and BOTH their airlines just went under. I really feel for them.

Well, LACSA technically went out of business years ago. It really doesn't exist anymore. It was absorbed into El Salvador's TACA. Your flight might have a "LACSA" designation, but the plane and crew will be TACA. It's a fine airline in good financial shape.

I agree with the others. TACA and its predecessor have been around since the 1930s and though we haven't flown them everyone we know who has has enjoyed them. You should be fine. The only international airline I wouldn't book right now is Alitalia.

This is a very interesting thread, since we’re having similar problems.
The only cheaper flights from NYC area to SJO in February are with TACA or US Airways (which is actually on Mesa Airlines).
The TACA one leaves from JFK at 5:20 am, not a great option for us in NJ, the US Airways/Mesa is better geographically – but do you know anything about Mesa? Does not seem great from what I read on the internet…but any firsthand experience here? Thanks

"TACA had a crash today at the airport; CNN is running a story about it."
It's only fair to qualify this: the crash was in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, not San Jose. TGU has a too-short runway with a really odd approach. The accident was tragic, but I wouldn't let that stop me from flying with TACA.
