I am planning a trip to Costa Rica in August, and I think my children, ages 10 and 8, are now big enough to truly enjoy the Osa Peninsula, but I would really appreciate some help. We have been to CR twice, and have stayed in Manuel Antonio, Playa Hermosa, Cahuita, La Fortuna, and a couple of other places, but I have little to no experience with the south Pacific area, and where to stay, what to see, etc. We normally choose mid priced lodgings, and prefer to venture out on our own, normally by car, but we know that we will be flying, and don't believe that we will have one here, which is a little concerning because we like to take trips into town, or to venture out. I have just started to explore this area, and my head is already swimming. We would like a place that is close to plenty of trails, lots of wildlife, waterfalls, swimmable beach, and close enough to walk or catch a ride to town. Any recommendations would really be appreciated.

Three weeks in August 2011 - trip report

I lived on the Osa for awhile and it very remote but amazing! August is the rainy season so be prepared for stormy nights and possible rain in the afternoons. And bugs. Rains start in April and get progressively worse each moth up until mid to late November. If you want to be on the beach, and have access to towns....I would check out Puerto Jimenez. I have heard nice things about the Iguana Lodge. I have stayed at the Aguila de Osa, a bit more expensive but loaded with activities and tours. Town is very small and runs on a generator...no roads so no need for a car! Zancudo is a small beach town with great beach rentals and a few small hotels. Fun, easy access to Osa for hikes and sport fishing is available. Golfito is a place I would not recommend at all. The Southern Zone, while incredibly beautiful and worth the journey, does not have the same type of towns like the areas you have traveled to before. Much more oriented to needs of community but there is still plenty to see and eat..and do!
We stayed at Bosque del Cabo, and it's amazing there - wonderful hiking and trails and tons of wildlife. We saw all 4 kinds of monkeys there, toucans, scarlet macaws - the works. Might be more pricey than what you're looking for though. Cabinas Jimenez always gets good reviews if you want to explore that one.
