I'm looking to take a trip by myself to Latin America. I don't mind roughing it, I was wondering if anybody had suggestions for destinations, and how to maximize my trip without killing my budget.

Are you male or female? If you are traveling alone, I'd start with Costa Rica. Very safe for travel (provided you have good common sense!). Other areas are probably fine, I'm sure. I just like the idea of a country where English is spoken quite a bit. I felt very comfortable alone there.
For a first time traveller to Central America, Panama is another good place to start. It has a well developed infrastructure that allows you to travel around the country, easily, comfortably and cheaply. English is very common in the city - not so much outside but I think a little more than Costa Rica in my experience.
Lots to do, lots of safe cheaper places to stay and good connections both north to Central America and south as well.
