I'm hoping to find suggestions on where I can take my family for a month in Mexico in January of 2014 to experience an authentic Mexican town, have an opportunity to do some mission work (orphanages, churches, etc.), and to relax.
I'm traveling with my wife, my mother, and 4 children, the oldest of which will be 6.
We have some important criteria....
On the coast
Safety - must be safe. We want to experience the culture, not be concerned about our safety.
Need to be able to rent a car
We very much would like to rent a house in town, not a condo in a development 10 miles out of town
Must be within about an hour drive of an airport.
I've been looking at La Paz, as well as Zihuatenejo.
I welcome any and all suggestions. Thanks!
Extended vacation/mission ideas for young family

La Paz is a lovely town. That would be perfect for what you describe. Sorry I have no details, but I did spend two weeks there once and it fits what you seek. There's poor people everywhere, so that's just a matter of hooking up with the local organizations to volunteer.
