EXCURSIONS FROM MARGARITA

We will be spending Christmas in Margarita and would like information on excursions to other islands in the region, particularly Trinidad and also the Angel Falls. Any other tips and ideas for our stay would be welcome.

Many thanks

Hi Adam,

I'm a Dutch 29 year old who lived in Margarita for some time. Christmas is a very good time to spend in Margarita if you like sun, beach and party. I did it last year and I will be there this year again. As for excursions, you can easily book a trip to Trinidad, but do it in a travel agency, not in one of the hotels. One day trips to Canaima are also available (and recommendable if you do not have more time). You can take the ferry from Punta de Piedras to Puerto la Cruz several times a day.
An idea for your trip. If you speak (a little) Spanish, try to get out of those damn tourist resort and mingle with locals or at least Venezuelan people. Much more fun! If you like some bar & disco advice, tell me what you are looking for.

Rgds,
Antonio

Thanks Antonio

Very useful information. We are not very club/disco orientated but do enjoy meeting locals and hanging around bars - especially if they do good cocktails! Is it better to book all excursions through travel agencies ratther than through the tour guides/hotels? Also, would it be worth going to Caracas or the Angel Falls? We want to spend most of our time by the pool but a bit of culture/nature would be good!

My wife and I took the day trip to Angel Falls and were certainly glad we did! Beautiful scenery and a nice (not too strenuous)hike throught the foothills of the mountains. One bit of warning: if you are at all nervous about flying, don't go! The plane (a small 10 passenger prop) will do some rather spectacular turns while passing by Angel Falls that will upset a weak stomach. Perfectly safe and the pilots are great, but you'll think your on a small roller coaster for awhile. In '98 when we went it was about $300 US per couple, which we booked through the hotel travel desk. That included a boxed breakfast and full lunch. You may be able to get a better deal with a travel agent.

Dear Adam,
There are some other excursion trips you can take from Margarita Island as well. If you like pristine and beautiful beaches with water as clear as a swimming pool, you must check out Los Roques Archipelago National Park. You can do a day trip there or overnight. Linea Turistica Aerotuy and Asereyca run tours to Los Roques as well as to other worthwhile destinations such as Grenada and La Blanquilla. Aerotuy has a web site. Check out Playa Caribe on Margarita Island. It is in front of the Mosquito Coast Bar/Restaurant. They have all night parties on Wed. nights (as of 1/98 at least). It is the best beach on Margarita in my opinion.
