Excellence Riviera Cancun - 5 semi-single women???

Hey everyone! I'm trying to get together a group of 5 friends (4 women and myself) at an all inclusive adults only resort in Mexico. We were thinking Cancun because although we DO want to relax we also want to have the option for a bit of partying as well.

We were looking at Excellence Riviera Cancun, but I am concerned it will be too "honeymoon-y" if you know what I mean. I also heard that there isn't a beach on the property or that the beach is full of seaweed? Can someone confirm or deny this?

Also, if you've stayed here before, how did you book? I called the resort itself, and the rates SEEM decent, but I'm always looking for a way to get a cheaper rate. We've already decided not to go with the flights they offered, I searched sidestep.com and the exact same flights quoted to me were almost 70 dollars cheaper if I booked them on my own.

We're not looking to do this until next summer, May, June, July or August.

Any help would be appreciated!

There are many reviews of this resort on tripadvisor. It reads like a romantic spot.

Definitely read the TripAdvisor.com reviews. Dh and I honeymooned at Excellence Riviera Maya when it was Secrets Excellence, back in June 2005. It is definitely geared toward couples - for example, every room has a two-person jacuzzi next to the bed (rather than a tub in the bathroom). Also, the location is pretty isolated - you'd have a distance to travel for good shopping and nightlife. But we really enjoyed it and I don't think it would be a bad choice for a group.

Oh, and the beach is quite nice. There is seaweed so it isn't perfectly clear blue postcard water, but it was fine for swimming (you'll feel the seaweed brushing your legs a bit in shallow areas) and great for sunbathing.

If you want an adults only all inclusive, look into the Royal Playa del Carmen. It's right in Playa so you can walk right to shops and bars, etc if you want to go off site. It has a great beach and facilities. Not as much a "couples" atmosphere as some other adults only resorts.

Go for the Royal Playa del Carmen! I did a trip report on it in May after a girls trip. It is an awesome town with fun and mexican flair. The Cancun hotel area is like going to south florida. Playa has beach clubs, rooftop lounges, salsa bars (you may need a little spanish to communicate in there as we were the only americans...but it was the best!!! ) It really gives you the best of both worlds. The resort is so nice and we relaxed during the day and would head into town at night. Met fun people to hang out with at the resort. It is so safe (much safer than anywhere else I've ever been). It was so fun, we plan to return in May again. We may not stay at the AI as we want to try all the great restaurants in Playa and all the food/drinks in town were so reasonable...oh, and the best is that we never had to get into a car once at the resort...you can walk everywhere!

Thanks guys! My friends and I checked out the reviews of RPDC on trip advisor and playa.info and we're psyched! Got a great rate from Liberty Travel so we're gonna book it! Can't wait!

We will also be heading down again next May. Brush up on some spanish and head to the authentic salsa bar...amazing to see. Coco Maya was a favorite during our stay too as well as roof top Daseo. Have fun! We loved it so much...we are returning this year.
