Four people apparently have died. Quepos and area are without electricity and the highway through Braulio Carrillo National Park north of San Jose leading to the Caribbean is closed by landslides.
La Nacion's website has more news. The site is in Spanish, and you have to sign up and log in to get the details, but they are doing a good job of updating it as more details come in.

I hope Lisa doesn't mind my copying her e-mail to Fodor's. It does sound like travel to Quepos will be problematic for awhile. Read on:
This info taken from www.insidecostarica.com. Well, it's been a WILD ONE! It appears the epicenter was somewhere between Parrita and Quepos and it certainly felt like more than a 6.2 (actually felt like it was UNDER my house!
No reports of anything "falling off the hill" in M. Antonio. Quepos is a bit of a mess right now. SuperMas has most stock on the floor, Marsha at ElGran Escape reports losing most of her dishes, glasses and all liquor stock behind bar as do most restaurants right now. Sporatic window glass breakage and a few fallen roofs. HUGE crack in the road somewhere between here and Parrita will cause lots of headaches for awhile. TV reports show alot of damage in Parrita to homes and businesses. We are still experiencing major aftershocks, very unnerving. Will keep you updated. Off to the glass shop now. We lost a hugh picture window and I anticipate the line will be very long for repair! Thank you for asking!
6.2 Quake Shakes Costa Rica
A strong earthquake shook Costa Rica early Saturday morning, causing power outages and material damage. There were no immediate report of casualties, however, as the night gave to morning, six persons were reported to have died as a direct result of the quake, suffering heart attacks and in traffic accidents.
The quake, with a magnitude of 6.2 on the Richter scale, hit at 2:07 a.m. (08:07 GMT) and was centered 48 km south-southwest of San Jose.
The areas that hardest felt the quake was Quepos and Parrita, where power and communications were restored several hours later.
More than 60 aftershocks were felt until 4:15am and then two hours later, at 6:17 a slight movement was felt again. At 7:30am, officials from Ovsicori (Observatorio Vulcanológico y Sismológico de Costa Rica) say more than 70 aftershocks have been felt since the main movement, something that will continue during the next few days, as the energy is released.
No major damage was reported. Two houses in Alajuela and Cartago were reported to have suffered slight damage and Zurqui tunnel, the major roadway connecting Límon to San José is temporary closed due to rock slides.
The earthquake struck when leaders of 21 nations were gathered here for an Ibero-American summit. Authorities assigned to the security of the foreign dignitaries reported that all leaders were safe and all normal after the early morning scare.

Hello all! We're doing a bit of clean up here in Quepos/M.Antonio and the power is up and running! Bars/restaurants and shops are just starting to reopen at 11 a.m. and it appears to be business as usual. The road between Quepos and Parrita is passable and the policia are out in force directing thru any slowups. Don't cancel yalie! Everything will be fine by the time you get here.

Percy, it's the website. I can't imagine why there has been so much difficulty lately. Frustrating. I, too, heard from Neta. She said it was quite an experience. Still unable to call--I guess many people from the US are attempting calls to Costa Rica. She did say the phones were working there just fine. At least we can seek shelter from our Oklahoma weather!

Well let me try this one:
Hi shillmac
I am sure you all have pictures of the quake in your local newspaper.
There are four pictures of the quake in our local newspaper.
1.A huge crack in the concrete highway with a stop sign fallen into one of the cracks.
2.Another crack and upheaval of a part of the highway, with a 4x4 driver attempting to circle around it.
3. Man lying on the ground with several people bending over him.
4. Telephone booth totally wrecked ,the concrete slab that the telephone was anchored to is leaning at an angle.
The Red Cross in Costa Rica says 8 people died ,mostly from heart attacks.
Costa Rica Emergency Commisssion said 500 homes were damaged, some people with no power.
A 32 year old Italian man died , when he lost control of his motorcycle.
There was a 21 country American Summit meeting in San Jose and their security was really rushing around trying to find out what happened.
Yes shillmac ,Neta said it was quite an experience and that the water in her pool moved for an hour.!!
Percy.......okay I am clicking and crossing my fingers.

Today's edition (11/22/04) of AM Costa Rica http://www.amcostarica.com/ has information on conditions. Under the "School Closed" article, several paragraphs related to road conditions and tourism. In a nutshell for this area, road repairs are have already begun and very little tourism related damage. Safe travels to all!

Wonderful to hear the various positive reports. But just a reminder: when the quake hit the Bay area some years ago, it took many months to achieve repairs. I'm somewhat wary of news saying that things are ok so soon after a quake of that magnitude. In fact, my memory is that it often takes a number of days/weeks even to locate cracks, much less fix them. Good luck to CR-- a scary lady, Mother Nature!
