We go to Puerto Vallarta regularly, always pay in US too. The exchange rate will be posted all over, the drivers are usually very knowledgeable about the exchange rate, and honest. And if you have some doubts, when you arrive at your hotel don't hesitate to ask the bellman to help you figure out what to pay. Where are you going? US currency is generally taken anywhere at the touristy spots - PV, Cancun etc.

Mike, US currancy is widely accepted everywhere in Mexico. You will likely have an exchange rate between 9 and 10 pesos to the dollar -- the quick "divide by 10" will always keep you out of trouble. Pack a lot of single dollar bills for the trip. Nearly all service people in Mexico prefer tips in US dollars. Also, if you have a major credit card, due to the power fo VISA, MasterCard and AmX, you will be amazed at the exchange rate you end up with when all clears your account. You will not get a better rate on you own, so use your plastic everywhere you can.

Just to add my opinion on the peso vs dollar issue. I always use the local currency no matter where I travel--I feel it is much less confusing and the polite thing to do.<BR>As far as the service people who "prefer" the dollar, I would somewhat disagree. I have several close friends in the service industry in Mexico and while they accept the dollar, they only do so as a convenience to the Americans. They also feel this is another form of American arrogance--no other country demands or expects them to accept their currency.

Mike, you didn't mention where you were going. In the major resort areas, USD will be OK, but outside of the resort areas pesos may be better. Airport terminals usually have exchange booths although they may not give the best rates. You can check the daily exchange rate on the internet - just do a search for currency exchange.
