Driving to Arenal Volcano

It's about 200km from San Jose to Montane de Fuego, which is between La Fortuna and Tabacon Resort. Are you renting a car? If so, the driving will be a bit slow, due to narrow winding roads, but they are in decent condition (for Costa Rica!).

Here are some messages from the Choose Costa Rica Bulletin Board, discussing this route:

http://discoverypress.com/wwwboard/messages/1285.html

I would suggest you go through San Ramon and La Tigra and not through San Carlos. I understand it is faster, has less traffic and is in better shape than that San Carlos route.
We took the San Ramon/La Tigra route last year in August and it took us 3 hours from San Jose. Montana de Fuego has signs posted along the road which helped in navigating.
