Hi!
I am a solo female traveller currently in Mexico. I would like to buy a car and drive across Central America to panama! Has anyone done it? Is it safe as a female solo traveller? I speak very basic Spanish. I am also keen to find another solo traveller who might be willing to join and share costs! But where would I advertise? Already checked craigslist..
Any help is appreciated! Have a great day

I have friends here in Belize who used to drive back and forth between here and Canada. They had to do this because they had an absolutely enormous dog that the airlines wouldn't fly (at least not at a cost they could afford).
Anyway, they made this drive several times, but, both said the last time they did it would be their last. The husband was 'shaken down' by the police for money. He's a big guy, used to play professional hockey--doesn't make any difference when you're in a room with half a dozen police asking for money.
This was two years ago or so, not sure how things are currently.
Why? That's my question.
The hassles (insurance, local driving habits, negotiating borders, dealing with police) strike me as enormous, especially for someone who says she speaks "very basic Spanish." What do you plan to do with the car once you get to Panama? I doubt very much that you can enter any country with a car in your name and leave without it.
It's been done many times in the past, last folkes I met that did it was in April 2010, husband & wife who drove from San Diego, but I don't recommend it, especially since you are a single female, read the 2 comments above---bad idea, boarder crossing are a major hassel, etc. ship your car to Panama if you want it there SAFELY.
