We looked at it but decided against it because the distance was too far. We also tried to find reasonably priced airfare from Cancun but were unsuccessful. We also ruled out the train because it was too expensive and took too long. Maybe the bus would be best. It's still on our list.

How much time do you have? That would be my first consideration. As folks who have driven in the Yucatan (I hate TOPES!!!), I can't imagine how torturous the drive would be (the chiropractic bills alone would finance a return trip!). The drive from Villahermosa to Palenque wasn't too bad--but the drive from Palenque to San Cristobal is one I don't care to do again in this lifetime.

Topes are speed bumps, big ones.
We took a bus from Palenque to Campeche, spent a very pleasant night there, then continued on a bus to Cancun. It really wasn't a bad trip, with breaking it up like that.

The "topes" on the road from Palenque to SCC--are a rope drawn across the road as your car approaches--most often done by children who then swarm your car trying to sell fruit or beg pesos--very dangerous!
