I am planning a trip with my brother for early August. I am looking to rent a "cabin" in the Curu National Wildlife Refuge (I have the details I need for this). Here are my questions...
1. We will have a rental SUV. Are we better off to drive to Curu or to take the ferry from Puntarenas? (We will probably be coming from Monteverde)
2. If we take the ferry, are we better off leaving the SUV or paying to ferry it? Is it safe to leave in Puntarenas? (Suggestions)
3. Curu - My brother and I are pretty "tough guys", but the one thing that concerns me are mosquitos and no-see-ums at night. Is it bearable with a net and some citronella? Is it better or worse in August?
Thank you in advance for your advise.

Three weeks in August 2011 - trip report

jmoeller,
My wife and I spent 1 night at Curu last June. The "cabins" are very basic and rustic. We drove our SUV from Monteverde to Puntarenas and took it across on the ferry. Wasn't too expensive. Beware of scam artists at the Puntarenas ferry area who will tell you that there won't be enough room on the next ferry unless they help you get on. He acts like it is a service of the ferry but then tries to get you to tip him a sizeable amount for his help. I wouldn't leave a vehicle in Puntarenas (it looked kinda rough)and you may want to drive to Cabo Blanco Reserve while on the Peninsula.
The Mosquitos are there and the "cabins" are far from bugproof, but if you have a Mosquito net and the Citronella, you should be fine. In June it was extremely hot at night and we didn't have the netting but survived with Citronella. Don't know about August.
Have a great time. Curu was very interesting.
