We need to go to Mexico City in January but there is no direct flight from South Africa, We considered flying to Beunos Aires and taking a cruise towards Mexico, rather than taking another long flight, Any suggestions ?

That is cruise season, and you are likely to be able to find some kind of segment that goes around South America. These often have legs that begin in Buenos Aires, but it's an expensive and time-consuming proposition. You'd probably have to cruise from Buenos Aires around the tip of South America and up its west coast all the way to Puerto Vallarta or some port like that (and possibly all the way to San Diego or LA).
If I had to choose between taking a flight and cruising for 2+ weeks, I'd probably take a flight, considering the time and expense. Though I can't deny that the cruise would be a more comfortable option.
If I were going to do this trip, I'd probably fly to Washington DC or Atlanta and then nonstop to Mexico City from there.
