CR Trip Report Pt. 2 Osa and La Paz

Flew from Quepos to San Jose to Puerto Jimenez on Sansa. We had originally booked on Nature Air but they called us two weeks ahead of time to tell us their flight would be delayed. No problem canceling and getting on Sansa. You can only fly from Quepos to Jimenez in the high season. We booked the earliest morning flights possible thinking that there would be less chance of weather delays. All flights were on time. The airport in Quepos is a large very comfy Tiki type building. Snacks are available. 12 seater single prop planes. Pretty smooth flights. The San Jose lounge was small, cement block, no food or anything available. Even the water cooler was closed. The airport in P.J. is an iron roofed cement bench. We stopped in Drakes Bay before getting to P.J. The runway there is not paved. The airport looked like a small Tiki hut. All flights were on time.

Puerto Jimenez; The Bosque del Cabo driver, Kevin, picked us up at the airport. He took us to the grocery store on request. (I left our sun lotion on the boat, cost me $16.00 to replace it!)
It took us about an hour to drive 12 km’s. Definitely need a four wheel drive. Even the streets in P.J. were really bad. And this is just the beginning of the green season!
Cabinas: We got Pizote standard cabina, . Beautiful view of the ocean. We saw macaws, tocans, monkeys, etc. from our rocking chairs on our porch. NOTE: Check your hot water first thing. Let it run a few minutes. We did not have hot water for two days because we did not ask. Apparently there is a pump system that can go out and they have to restart it. Then, it takes awhile to get hot. We saw Casa Miramar on one of our hikes. Lovely, overlooking the ocean. The garden cabins are quite a ways away from dinner. But, I bet you see more animals the farther you are from reception. One women stayed at Mariposa Delux Cabina which is near to reception, but on the edge of the jungle. She reported seeing lots of animals.
Tours; Definitely take the early morning bird tour with Eduardo. You don’t go far and he finds tons of animals. Not just birds, but monkeys too. My husband did another fishing trip while I had a massage. The massage was ok. Dick brought back 60 lbs of mahi-mahi. Everyone was thrilled! Fresh fish for dinner.
Trails: We did the TiTi which is about two hours and not too challenging.
Did Golfo Dulce trail to the Botanical gardens and back over the suspension bridge. This is no small bridge. It is about 50-75 feet long. As I am scared of heights, my husband waited while I went over so it would not shake. I made it!
Trail to the beach is very steep, mostly down hill. It took about two hours to get to the farthest beach. We had arranged pickup before we left, no way could I climb up that trail! They were ½ an hour late. They charge you $10.00. Pick up is on the beach access road, right at the far access to beach #3. The beaches are rocky and have undertow. Surfers hang out on beach #1, We were the only ones at #3. There are houses and small hotels along the beach road.
Pacific trail. We did not do it, but we were told it took about 20 minutes down, and 1 hour up. This was from 25ish yr. olds.
Food: Breakfast was good. Lunch was just ok. Dinner was the same thing, Steamed veggies, rice beans, and varying meat/poultry whatever. The best were the appetizers served at the bar before dinner. They were excellent. All staff were excellent!
La Paz: Sansa back to San Jose where Wilson from Wady tours picked us up, and drove us to Peace Lodge. Roads were fine. We were in Montezuma room, a standard. I can’t imagine any room being bad. The room was huge with more amenities then my house. Very luxurious.
Fed the humming birds very cool!! Walked the falls. Saw only a few people it was about 3 p.m.
Dinner in their fancy restaurant. They try to be very upscale. The food was good, pricy. However, we ordered just entrees, their filet that was more top sirloin quality. Next morning we took the horseback riding/rafting trip. The trip there was very scenic. There is a better view of La Paz waterfall on the road then from the walk. This tour was a mistake. I have only ridden a horse once when I was a teen. Well, I had the “A” personality horse who wanted to be in the lead and sped up all the time to do so. After 2 ½ hours of riding (It was supposed to be an hour) my back was killing me. Because it was so long, we had to immediately do the rafting (for beginners), lunch afterward. The river was beautiful. But, after 1/3 of the way, my back just gave out. We had to pull out and wait for the van to pick us up. They were very safety concerned. They asked if I wanted lunch, I said no, find me some advil and take us back. So, they found a pharmacy, and back we went to peace lodge. We had a quick lunch, (a burger for me and fish and chips for hubby) which was excellent. I had already scheduled a couples massage and was worried about my back. Turns out the masseuse, Arturo, is a physical therapist as well. I had the best massage of my life. I was still hurting (still am!)so cancelled our plans for the French restaurant down the road and had room service and the wonderful hot tub. Oh, I had a sweat shirt and pants for nighttime.
Next morning we left at 7 with our Wady driver Ernesto. Apparently Wilson had other duties. Ernesto’s English was a bit better. He was just as good a driver/guide. Got to Poas when it opened. The guards said it was clouded over. Well, I waited in the coffee shop because of my back and Ernesto took my husband up. It was clear!! But very cold! Maybe in the 40’s with a strong wind. Definitely a jacket, pants, and whatever else you have. The girl in the gift shop had gloves on! Drove to Doka plantation. Did not take the tour. I only wanted to buy Tres Generacions coffee. It is not found in the grocery store. Orquides Inn had a few bags. So we tasted, looked around and loaded up with coffee. If you buy twelve you get one free. Grabbed a quick lunch at one of those chicken places, found another pharmacy for the Costa Rican brand of ben gay, drove around Alajuela just to look, then off to the airport for our 2 pm flight.
I want to go back! I would not do the horseback riding, I Have to do the rafting! I would not go back to Bosque del Cabo, but would try some other wildlife oriented place, and do Arenal.
Please let me know if you have any questions!
