CR - Arenal to MA by car
Any advice on driving from Arenal to Manuel Antonio? The drive looks pretty simple from Arenal to San Ramon, but I'm a little confused about getting from San Ramon to Route 3 and San Mateo. There appear to be back roads from S.Ramon to Rt. 3, but they're not numbered on my map (National Geographic). Suggestions? Directions? Thanks

Greg, you are so right. It is confusing. You may have to ask in San Ramon. We've driven all over these roads (same ones you are speaking of) many times, but have never driven from Arenal to Manuel Antonio directly, so don't have experience with your dilemma.
I strongly suspect the answer is (from San Ramon) to backtrack east on the Interamerican highway just a short distance until you see an exit for Atenas or Palmares.
As an alternative, you can always just get on the Interamerican at San Ramon and drive west on it to Puntarenas, then south to MA. I don't think the time difference is appreciable.
Highly recommend the Berndston & Berndston map available at Barnes & Noble. I have the National Geographic map as well, and the B & B is slightly more detailed.

Greg: From San Ramon, turn left as if traveling to San Jose. This road eventually will take you to the turn off (right ramp) for Atenas, Orotina, Jaco, Manuel Antonio (look for any of these cities on the sign). We thought we'd try the shortcut thru Palmares to Atenas a few months ago but were strongly urged against it. As you've figured out by now, route numbers are not generally used but destination signs are used. It's a scenic trip from Arenal to M.A. Enjoy!
