Costa Rica: Looking for recommendations for honeymoon

I have spent a lot of time in Costa Rica and there
are two places that are must-sees for newlyweds.
If you like beaches, go to Manuel Antonio on the
Pacific side. A beautiful hotel there is called "si
como no". It is owned and was designed by a man
from the US who we were told designed sets for Disney.
It is on the side of the mountain overlooking the ocean
and it is fabulous! The lobby is designed to look
like the prow of a ship... There is a place 2 doors
up the hill that has "Monkey Hour" specials- happy
hour is when the monkeys migrate up the mountain and
stop at the bar for bananas. You can feed them by
hand! The national park is at the foot of the mountain
with beautiful non-developed beaches. It is my
favorite place in all of Costa Rica! The perfect place
for a honeymoon. If I ever get married, that's where
I want to go!
Also, you should go to Volcan Arenal- the Arenal Lodge
is good, to see the volcano erupt at night. It is
awesome. Ask for a room overlooking the volcano and
pray for a clear night. You can see the red lava as
it erupts and feel it beneath your feet.(But you're
actually 1 mi. away as the crow flies).
Either on the way to the Arenal Lodge or on the way back
you should stop at the Tabacon Springs Resort. It is
near the volcano and has natural hot springs that come from
the volcano. It feels wonderful and they have good
food if you want to eat lunch there.
If you want to go white water rafting, I suggest you
call Aventuras Naturales (Carlos will help you). They
have the best rafting guides, even though the other
companies may have prettier helmets! Ask about their
2day tour of the Pacuare River (a class 3 and 4).
You stop the first day at their lodge in the jungle
and have a romantic evening...
It's exciting and thrilling and you'll never forget it.
Beware: not for the timid, but beginners are okay.
I took a group down there last summer of college kids.

I did a 10 day tour of CR about 4 yrs ago in March;
even though it wasn't the rainy season, there was
a wonderful resort called Tililahari (sp?) that
had an open restaurant and beautiful birds would
come to the feeders. they also had the most wonder-
ful fresh fruit drinks (non alcoholic); it must
have been somewhat close to the Arenal Volcano,
because we did take an evening trip to see the
eruptions (maybe was a 20-40 min. drive to get there)
I highly recommend seeing the volcano at night. To
date, it has been the most awesome impressive sight
in my life. Somewhere at home I would have the
address, etc. on the resort. If you'd like
additional info, let me know.
We also went to MonteVerde Cloud Forest, and they
have a hummingbird gallery - they put out about
6 feeders and we must have seen 1/2 dozen different
hummers with beautiful irridescent colors all within
2-3 feet of us. Fantastic. Also, great birding.

I have been to Costa Rica a number of times, and there are many many beautiful places you could honeymoon. My favourite is a small private hotel on an endless beach called Esterillos Este. It is in a row of private houses, mostly unoccupied, so it is very quiet. No kids. A small pool, excellent food, wonderful hosts. The rooms are very small, and not luxurious, but we spent all our time in the hammocks or on the beach. It is called "Auberge du Pelican", and is run by Pierre and Mariette, who are from Quebec. The prices are very good, $35US per night, food and drink is extra. Tell them we sent you!

A honeymoon in october. Great. This would be the time to have a little help since time is short. I give you the name of a Adventure outfit we used in La fortuna next to Arenal Volcano. they can help you with adventures and bookings. They helped us alot [email protected]. Go to the Nicoya for a few days and to be alone but a nice place go to Iguanazul hotel near Tamarindo then watch the turtles do their thing,,Get's you in the mood-- Off to Monteverde and Arco Iris Lodge and their honeymoon suite. While there canopy tour and then horse tour to the Volcano and neat stuff to do around Fortuna. Enjoy-- Andy

We are a "second-honeymoon couple" who went for our 25th anniversary for 2 weeks in Costa Rica at the end of July last year. That's in the rainy season, but there were no real deluges that I recall. There are too many great places we visited to mention, but if you are adventurous, you can just prebook a couple of days hotel in San Jose, then book tours when you get there, after you have checked out a lot of web sites and know where you want to go. If you want to e-mail me, I can work up a list for you to start looking through, because I am doing the same thing for an old workmate who lives in Montreal. If you don't mind hot and steamy, get over to Pachira Lodge in Tortuguero. It's the best of the accomodations there, good food, an international clientele, and fantastic guides with the company we booked through. The incredible trip in by river boat was like a mini-Amazon jungle trip. Absolutely memorable! If you want to spend some time alone, without a lot of other people around (how long do you want to spend in C.R.?) check out www.nosara.com. Fabulous, but basically deserted beaches, especially nice if you surf. We stayed at the Villa Taype. Fairly basic accomodations, a pool, good breakfasts, nice meals up the road at the Cafe de Paris, and at other great restaurants in the area. Problem is you likely would have a lot of difficulty getting around in that part of the country without a car, and at that time of year. Very few taxis, and if you want to drive from San Jose, it's at least 6 hours. 4 wheel drives don't come cheap, and you need one to get around in rural Guanacaste. We flew to Carillo because the Nosara airport was closed, and shared a taxi to Nosara, an hour on bad roads in a jeep that forded three streams on the way. But it WAS worth it. We did without a car, and met a wonderful older couple who were building a new retirement house in Nosara, who drove us around. Turns out they only live about twenty miles from us here in Canada. In fact they are down there now. Maybe they would rent out the house to you for a short time.

My gil friend and I have been traveling to CR for 11 years. We love the Pacific coast around the Village of Nosara. The place has nice rooms, and great bar and small restaurant. There are plenty of other places to eat and the pacific beach of Playa Guiones is second to none.
