costa rica - flamingo beach resort
friends of mine are considering this resort in guanacaste specifically because they want to fish, dive & gamble. tours to volcano, zips, etc interest them too. has anyone been there? any comments on the food, rooms, beach or anything at all appreciated? is there any sort of small town nearby on the coast?

We visited Flamingo beach, which was lovely, but didn't stay at that particular place (condo instead; lots in the area).
Lots of nice beaches in the vicinity, several natural parks in the area, several coastal towns besides Flamingo nearby (a couple of miles from the restaurants and shops of Brasilito, and Tamarindo is also an easy drive).
Which volcano? It can be done, but it's a long day to visit Arenal (which is not doing anything right now, and would waste 6 hours in a car, unless they did an overnight). There are closer active "volcanic" things (hot springs, vents, and boiling mud pots) at nearby Rincon de Vieja volcano (http://www.liberiacostaricainfo.com/...e-La-Vieja.htm )
I think it's probably a good choice, area-wise.

There are several highly-rated restaurants in the area -- Mar Y Sol is just one example. For fishing, check out Bushwacker Tours, particularly if they are serious about it. Otherwise, Sail Hibiscus is a good bet for a bit of fishing, a bit of snorkeling and swimming, and otherwise relaxing and lounging with lunch and drinks. I can't help on the gambling front, but really there are enough other activities that they shouldn't be disappointed even if there aren't any casinos nearby.

The beaches around Flamingo are all unique and excellent. Check out Playa Danta and head to Lola's and pura vida ride for a great afternoon of good food and drink and plenty of choices of activities at Pura Vida Ride. You can check out Brasilito which is more of a local town and a great local restaurant on the main street is Pollo Tropical, Miguel the owner is wonderful. Tamarindo is probably the most active tourist town in the area with plenty of restaurants and shops.
