Costa Rica--first time

My family (my husband and I are our 3 children--23, 21, and 18 years old) are going to Costa Rica for the first time in March, 2016. We would like to spend most of our time on the beach and a couple of days near a rainforest or volcano. We will be there seven nights.

I appreciate any ideas, as I have no idea where to start.

Thanks!

Manuel Antonio and the Arenal area is the most popular combo for a first time trip I think. That's what we did, and it gives you a great overview of the country, plus they both have good infrastructure. We like Tulemar Bungalows for beach time. Lots of good hotel choices in the Arenal area depending on your budget.

I agree with Volcanogirl. For your timeframe, 2 locations is ideal.

Two destinations will eat up a lot of your time with only 7 nights. Travel is very slow. Driving is very stressful, no signs, no rules. Being driven is fun and scenic.
I would suggest setting up shuttle service to pick up at airport and take you to your lodge.
Manuel Antonio area would give you beach and access to all
types of rain forest adventures. Almost all tours and activities will pick you up from your lodge.
7 nights is not enough for just this area.
Taking my kids (20s) also in march 2016.

3 nights in each destination is perfectly okay. If you want rainforest and volcano, check out the Arenal Observatory Lodge. Rainforest hiking, fantastic wildlife, and the best volcano views in the country.

Agree with RAC, three or four nights in each spot is about right. CR is so diverse that it would be a shame to only see one area.

If you are looking for a real rainforest experience, I highly recommend you Nicuesa Rainforest Lodge. It embraces conservation and harmony with nature, and offers a perfect blend of comfort with environmental preservation. I was there with my family too and they loved it.
