My wife and I travelled there 3 years ago. You don't need a tour. We started in Chihuahua although the scenery starts at about Creel, and it is a long way from Chih to Creel. The round trip train was $200. If you can start in El Fuerte (Rio Fuerte B&B), stay in Ceochahui 2 nights at the Paraiso del Oso Lodge, Doug is a very friendly American. Stay 1 night in El Divisadero at the Mansion Tarahumara and then maybe to Creel and back. Awesome trip. Can give you more detail if you want. Awesome trip
Hoyas is right you do not need a tour company. However, I took Caravan Tours there, and if you want a tour company, this is way to go. I did my research prior and they lived up to their billing. All meals, no extras and good hotels. The hotels would be expensive on your own, I believe the own on the rim and the one in El Fuerte are each usually sold out and cost about $200 night anyway. I really enjoyed it am a now looking to go again with them to Costa Rica.
