For next December , we want to go on our on to mexican cities like Quéretaro, San Miguel Allende, Guanajuato, San Luis Potosi, Zacatecas, and others colonial places . We are a cople aged 70 e have travelled abroad for more than 25 years. How it is like going with four or five stars hotels reservations and there, at each city, rent a car with a drive to go around the place and go to the next city. Then start again?

I used deluxe buses to travel fro Mexico City to Quéretaro and Guanajuato. Since the bus terminal in the latter is out of town, we took a taxi to our hotel. Because of the way the town is built, much of the ride was underground, and this would be the case i think on many car rides.

However, I'm sure your hotels can put you in touch with local drivers. Don't hesitate to take the buses. They're comfortable and safe.

In Quéretaro we stayed at a rather stunning hotel, La Casa de las Marquesa, which I think will fit most definitions of four or five stars. http://www.lacasadelamarquesa.com/

I am very interested in these cities but have not traveled to them yet. When I do, I will plan around using the busses to get around (along with taxis or a private drivers), because I am not comfortable renting a car in Mexico.

Renting a car is certainly doable, but even with GPS, driving can be confusing and frustrating if you don't know the city. I live here and drive to GTO, SLP and QRO often and still get lost. Parking is hard to find. 1 way streets are often not marked well, and sometimes aren't indicated on the GPS. Laterals (frontage roads) appear quickly and its easy to miss your turn. Signage can be confusing at best. For the most part the drivers are aggressive. That said, if you had a car you could drive from QRO to Tequisquiapan and/or Bernal, and when in San Miguel, to Dolores, Pozos, and even GTO over the mountains via Santa Rosa where they have some of the most beautiful pottery in Mexico. As far as QRO hotels, it is true that Casa de la Marquesa is a beautiful building. Its more like staying in a museum than a hotel, but it is pricey for the quality of the rooms. I'd suggest something on Cinco de Mayo, such as Casa de 2 Patios or Dona Urraca. Its a quieter area but very walkable.

I think the OP was considering hiring a car and driver, not a self-drive car.

Ah, I think you maybe be correct Fra-Diavolo. I have no problem with the private car & driver idea. Self-drive rental is what I was cautinoing against.
