Mike -

I appreciate what you're saying: that living there, you don't personally feel the threat of danger. But that doesn't mean that those who do perceive it are "wrong." Currently, U.S. citizens are strongly discouraged from traveling to the area, under security alert from the U.S. State Dept.

There are dangers in COlombia but that doesn't stop countless tourists from visiting this beautiful country. I was surprised by my visit to Cartagena 2 years ago at the number people from all over the world who were there. I saw many Canadians, Italians, French, Argentinians, and Japanese.

Hopefully the country will improve in the foreseable future so other people may enjoy all the things COlombia has to offer.

Thats my point about the dangers. I was 5 blocks away from the bombimg on Friday night. It has set Colombia back, however like the Colombian people I went to work the next day. In my opinion if you come here, you only do if you know someone here you can trust to give you the right advice as there are dangers here if you go to the wrrong places. You only fly and not drive. The government here iiwas making headwayy into the securiity of the country by providing security caravans to popular destinatiions. There are dangerrs but not everywhere. You have to know the places to avoid

Mike,

You were five blocks from the bomb site? What was it like? Do you live near there? How are people taking it and the prospect of further terrorist actions? How about the US soldiers going down there to train Colombian soldiers?

Yes I do live near where the bombing occured but I keep walking to work every day. As one Colombian said to me "Terrorism is our like our daily bread, we put up with it every day". There are warningss of more terrorism bombings but some are just pipe bombs. The problem is narotraffic money that finances the terrorist acts. American help is always welcomed here by most Colombians. Personally I am not concerned as you can get very paraniod anywhere if you let the ssituation get to you. I have a great respect for the average Colombian here.

Hi Mike,
I'm thinking of spending 2 weeks in Cartagena studying Spanish and doing volunteer work. I'm a woman in my mid 20s traveling by myself. What do you think, safety-wise?
April -- if you would feel comfortable giving more details, I would be interested to understand the situation surrounding your friend's kidnapping.
Thank you,
Kate

I'd rather not discuss here as it is not my story to tell, but email me if you'd like a bit of background - [email protected]
I don't know if "The World's Most Dangerous Places" is still being published but that might be worth checking out.

Smartastic and Mike000--
Smartastic-Did you go to Cartegena to study? I am thinking about going this year for a week of study in Cartegena--would be interested in what you experienced.
Mike000- Do you have any advice about Bogota? If I go to Cartegena I am thinking about stopping for a night/day in Bogota to see the sights there. Any recommendations as to hotels in better areas for someone traveling alone?
Thanks to both
