Civil Unrest? Oaxaca

I've heard that things are unsettled in the area. Maybe good for them, but is it ok for tourists (esp from the US)? We are considering Oaxaca and Huatulco.

I have posted previously about what Oaxaca was like when I was there in July which you can search for. From the reports I am getting now, I don't think it would be worth visiting Oaxaca City right now, especially if it was a first time. There has been no police presense in the centro for months, there is incresed crime, and more destructive protests, I think I would pass. I keep thinking, that if you happened to be there when the police or military moved in, it would be a mess. Have not heard of any probelms at beach areas, although I have read some newspaper reports of informal militias setting up road blocks in rural areas.

Another frequent poster (GoMexico) thinks the situation in Oaxaca will continue until next Spring.

I just(returned from Oaxaca City and Huatulco for my honeymoon (10/1-10/12). Although we were nervous at first, we found it to be a very interesting time to go and encountered no problems. The zocalo (where most of the activity was taking place) was safe and relatively quiet during the day. We were advised to stay away at night. Oaxaca is a great city with excellent shopping and dining. Huatulco is a paradise. you would never know anything was happening in Oaxaca from the beach.

My husband and I have wanted to visit Oaxaca for many years and just decided the other day to head there for our December vacation. I started researching a trip that same day and was caught off guard when I read about the escalating violence. I had not seen anything on TV, newspapers, or internet since this began in May. We will have to wait a little longer before visiting.

Just saw a news alert on Fox News that Mexican President Vicente Fox ordered federal forces to the state of Oaxaca to restore order.

Here's a link for that breaking story from Bloomberg

The airport in Oaxaca was closed to commercial traffic yesterday.

I have been following Mark's blog for frequent updates re: the situation

He is an American teacher of English at a Mexican school in Oaxaca.
