I went in January 2010. It was amazing. The one thing I was disappointed about was that they no longer allow you to enter the ruins/buildings or walk on the stairs of them. This ended in 2006. I think had I known this before-hand, I would not have taken the three hour bus ride there. I would have liked to have gotten a closer look at the big pyramid. We went with a guide provided by Cancun Palace and he did an awesome job.

I would not take a tour, rent a car you can miss the hoards of people.
If you really want to climb the pyramids go to Uxmal.
Uxmal is about the same distance as Chichen, and much larger and you can climb most of them.

We did the bus tour from Cancun. Tons of people. For a smaller tour check out Yucca Treks at

We did the Tulum/cenote tour with them and it was great.

I second Yuccatrecks. Their tours are great, very small but much more personalized. They offer other tours as well, all are really great. I've done the CI and another that used to be called "Tulum and beyond". If it's still offered, it's a fantastic day!!
