Cell phone coverage in Belize
I was wondering what kind of cell coverage there is in Belize. I have a triband cell phone that gets international calling - but is there reception there? I have TMobile and it appears that they have a new international calling plan where you can pay $5/month and then your long distance calls are only .29/minute to a landline and .34/minute to a cell. Texts are only .20/text. That seems like a price that can't be beat - if there's a signal! I've gone the route of an international SIMM when we went to Costa Rica last year - but this would be less expensive if it works.
We'll be at both Chaa Creek and then in Ambergris Caye.
I've had no problems with signals in Mexico and Costa Rica - but not sure about Belize! I need to stay in touch with my business and would like to be able to call the kids once or twice!
Thanks!

That's the cost to call Belize from the US. Are you looking for roaming rates? The roaming rate is $2.99/min. Belize uses GSM 1900 so I would double check that your triband has that (Costa Rica is GSM 1800). You shouldn't have trouble getting coverage on Ambergris. I haven't been to Cayo recently.

A little suggestion: If you don't entirely need to make calls back home and just within Belize, it might make sense to buy a cheap pair of walkie talkies to get in touch within a 30 mile radius to people traveling with you. I'm going in September and my boyfriend will be Scuba Diving the blue hole for two days and we need something to align ourselves back together when he's done. We've decided to go with cheap walkie talkies so we don't need to pay roaming fees. These also come in handy down the line with other adventures like skiing and hiking and such. Just a suggestion to others who may have a similar question but more localized to Belize itself.

With T-Mobile, you should have service, but you will pay for it! Are you traveling with a group? Consider two-way radios (http://belizeantravel.com/2009/07/i-...wo-way-radios/). Better to coordinate on a two-way than through $2 and $3 charges per call. Some Motorola radios have pretty good range.

Anyone know if you can get one of the international SIMM chips that works in Belize? The kind you just swap with the SIMM you already have in your current phone. I had one that worked in Costa Rica last year and it worked out to less than 30 cents/minute.
