Cayos Cochinos/Hog Islands--worth the $$ to snorkel

We'll be staying at the Lodge at Pico Bonito in May, and we're looking at snorkeling Cayos Cochinos. But, it's not cheap. We enjoy snorkeling, but it's not the main reason we're going by any means.

Is the snorkeling there that amazing? We've heard great things, but we're not sold. We've snorkeled multiple locations on the Maya Riviera--how does it compare?

I stayed at the lodge at Pico Bonito in March this year. We had a very enjoyable time. I suggest for any hikes you wish to take or guided tours you ask for Herman. Amazing guide. Tell him the lady that hiked with him that had the foot injury (it was actually broken and I didn't know it) says hello. He took us to the unbelievable falls.

Just a word of caution regarding Pico Bonito, check your bill before you pay it. The front desk personnel were challenged when it came to adding and subtracting.

As far as snorkeling goes, we started our trip in Roatan and the snorkeling was absolutely the MOST spectacular I have ever done. Amazing reefs which we were calling the grand canyon of snorkeling.

We stayed at Infinity Bay condos and you are able to snorkel right from the beach. You can rent fins, kayaks, masks, etc. I would recommend you take a few days there as well because if you love to snorkel, this is the place where you want to be. Enjoy!

Thanks for the tips. We've already booked our travel--it's a relatively short trip as a birthday splurge. Roatan will have to be another time.

Did you get over to the Cayos Cochinos?

I haven't been to Cayos Cochinos but imagine the snorkeling would be awesome - we have really enjoyed the snorkeling (and diving) on Utila, Roatán, and especially Guanaja. That said, you might save a few bucks by ferrying and/or flying to Roatán for the day where you can snorkel from shore; you'd want to be sure to choose a non cruise ship day if possible. Happy trails!

Was in Cayos Cochinos in March, took a day trip there from Roatan. The mainland is closer....it was in one word, INCREDIBLE. The scenery, tiny tropical isles, the mainland/ mountains as a backdrop, the water/ clarity/ reefs/ beautiful. I loved, loved, loved it. It was expensive from Roatan/ and we are normally not "tour" people, but it was worth every penny & I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
