We (family of four) are planning to go to Cancun over winter holidays. I want to use Mariott points to stay at this hotel. Would appreciate any feedback and opinions about this hotel. An colleague suggested that there is no beach with this hotel. is this true?
Also would like a recommendation for a hotel in PDC area. None of the names sound familiar and are not known american brands. Can anyone help with a suggestion? Thank you

I don't think there are any American brand hotels in PDC, at least I don't remember any. You've got some smaller Mexican hotels (ranging from rock bottom to okay) and some of the deluxe AI resorts. There aren't any really nice non-AI hotels in PDC IMO. But maybe you aren't as picky as I am, the ones that they think are really nice are just average.
So what kind of hotel are you looking for in PDC? With kids you might want an AI, the Iberostar ones just south of PDC are rated pretty well. For regular small Mexican hotels, I like the Riviera del Sol myself.
Thanks. How about the beach in Casa Magna Marioot hotel? Thanks again about the suggestion.
I'd suggest going to the Cancun forum on tripadvisor with your beach questions.
Ever since hurricane Wilma a few years ago, the beach in front of the hotel zone hotels has come and gone, but it's never been the same, which is such a shame, because the beach used to be magnificent. (The water in Cancun is still a startlingly gorgeous turquoise).
There are plans for beach restoration starting soon, this winter, I think.
The hotel itself is very nice, beautiful lobby, and Marriotts are always well kept.
The beach restoration has started in Cancun. It probably won't be completed until March 2010 but you can follow the updates on Tripadvisor. it also has tons of reviews of the hotel.
We've stayed at the Casa Magna a couple of times. The beach was small and it was rocky last time we were there.
Personally I think the pool is too small for the size of the hotel which is not so much of a problem when the hotel is half empty. They also let you use the pools of the JW Marriott next door and the infinity pool is lovely. The JW is a touch more upscale all round.
We had planned to stay at Casa Magna for 5 nights around Thanksgiving on points but I recently checked the rate and they were charging less than $100 a night, inc breakfast plus 4th night free!
So I'm saving my points for another time... even though I didn't end up booking the Marriott!
