Hello--
I am planning a trip to the Yucatan in mid Dec, landing in Cancun with further destinations of Akumal and Tulum. Is it best to rent a car or rely on taxis/ buses? I'm not worried about the driving so much, but more about having a car sitting idle when we are not on the go. We do plan to take some day trips esp. while in Tulum to the ruins, cenotes, and Sian Kaan. Would it be best to rent for the entire trip, a few days, or not at all? We do not mind walking and/or taking public transportation as long as it is frequent and reliable. Is there such a thing?

If you can rent a car, do so. You will have more time and can explore more places. Also, it will be easier to get meals at a variety of places not limited to where you are staying. We drove to Coba after seeing the ruins in Tulum and were impressed-without the mob of tourists.
There is good bus transport, but mostly on the main road. Another alternative is to rent a driver and a car for the days you are touring around.

I will make a point of checking out Coba while in Tulum.
Hi. I'd recommend renting a car for a few days. We've been to Mexico twice (we stayed once in Riviera Maya, the other in Cancun/Cozumel). We rented a car each time for 2-3 days, in the middle of our vacation (so relaxation/beach days were left for the beginning and end of our vacations).
I think having your own car gives you flexibity in terms of time and where you want to go. I also agree with the previous poster regarding dining. We took advantage of the days we had to car to go eat at recommended restaurants that weren't at our hotels.
I'd also recommend Coba. It's not far from Tulum which is faily quick tour (compared to bigger ruins). So you could do both in one day.

Looks like we are planning a very similar route for March - we are renting a car as well. One piece of info I wanted to pass on, I have been in touch with folks around Sian Ka'an and the road is pretty beat up... they recommended a jeep. Just FYI.
If you find a cheap rental let me know!
Also, hope you post a trip report when you get back!

anyone find a jeep rental? or suv. they seem very expensive
SUV are the most expensive for sure. Executive is one company that has reliable jeeps and suvs.
Some companies disengage the 4wd on the Jeeps. Make sure this hasn't been done if you rent. My friend just got back from the biosphere and she did have the jeep and said she was glad she did. Executive is a good choice to rent from. We've never had any trouble with them.
