Looking for some advice on renting a 4x4 and driving in Nicaragua.
We'll be staying at a rental house near Popoyo in August. The question is, is it easier to pick up the rental in Managua and drive down to Popoyo or take the shuttle to SJDS and pick up the car rental there ?

Well this depends on what time you arrive to the airport, i recommend not to drive at night adn if you do come during the day, i will say at the aiport is easier, maybe getting a GPS will be helpful as well.
In San Juan del Sur, there is only one rent a car compnay called Alamo Rent a Car and i will highly recommned to let them know ahead of time the type of car you want so they can have it there for you because most vehicles ar etransported from Managua to there.
If you are coming late in the afternoon or night, you do not want to drive when it is dark..It gets dark early here, around 6:30pm..It would be easier just to get the car at the airport and drive to Rivas, where you will see the sign for 'Tola" and go right..You can only go right..Be sure to pick up all your supplies before you get to Popoyo..You don't want to be driving back & forth to Rivas once you are out there..Make sure you have 4 wheel drive if you are doing this trip before November..If it is late when you arrive, you can stay right across the street (from the airport) at 'Las Mercedes" hotel or just take the shuttle to SJDS and sleep there.. www.iskratravel.com Iskra Travel is 65 dollars for 2 people..or 115 for a "Private" pick-up , meaning you get the whole van in case you have more people traveling with you..
