car rental 4x4 or car?

Hi, my family of 5 is planning on spending the month of January in Playa Grande, Guanacaste..thinking about renting a vehicle. We surf, so would need to get to some other beaches, and would like the freedom of a rental car. Wondering if I could rent a car or do I need a 4x4 for that area.
Would love any sugestions!
