I've recently researched this option for an upcoming trip to Cancun myself. It can indeed be done but here are the pros and cons: You will have to spend two or three nights in Guatemala as that's the way the planes run from Cancun to Flores. They do not run every day. The site itself probably demands this length of time anyway to do it justice. I have seen one sight offering a day trip to Tikal but it flies out of Playa, getting you up about 3AM. Roundtrip from CUN to FRS is about $600 for two. Roundtrip airfare from JFK to Guatemala City is about $850 again for two. Guatemala is an extremely cheap country to stay in (airfare to Flores aside). Bottom line is that it makes more sense to make this a seperate trip, unhurried and relatively inexpensive. Guatemala is a beautiful country, not really a side trip. Having said that I will still go downtown while in Cancun and shop around at one of the many travel agents there. Maybe if I can get a better price (a far better price) than thus far over the internet I'll still do it. Leave yourself open. Have fun.
